Rumors about Apple transitioning its upcoming iPhone 16 lineup from mechanical to capacitive buttons have gained new momentum. A recent supply chain report from Economic Daily suggests that Apple has chosen Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) to supply the necessary components for this significant design shift.

According to the report, ASE is set to start volume production in the third quarter, which is cutting it close given the typical September launch timeline for new iPhones. In addition to ASE, SMIC is also reportedly involved, tasked with creating two new System-in-Packages (SIPs) essential for eliminating the mechanical buttons.

Adding an intriguing layer to the rumors, the report mentions that the iPhone 16 will feature two Taptic Engine motors. These will provide haptic feedback mimicking a physical press, similar to the sensation on Apple’s Magic Trackpad. Internally, the capacitive transformation projects have been dubbed "Project Nova" for the Capture button and "Project Atlas" for the Action button.

Despite the buzz, skepticism remains regarding the feasibility of completely replacing all buttons with capacitive ones in the iPhone 16, especially given previous inaccurate forecasts about the iPhone 15. It's also noted that while Economic Daily has a reputable track record for predicting supplier activities, its accuracy on Apple's specific product plans is less reliable.

The iPhone 16 series is also rumored to boast larger display sizes and enhanced camera features, including a Tetraprism 5x zoom on the pro models and a new arrangement for the cameras on the standard versions.

As we approach the expected unveiling in September 2024, these rumors highlight the potential for significant changes in iPhone design and functionality, stirring excitement and speculation among Apple enthusiasts and tech watchers alike.
